A 19th century Meat Plate.

The decent sized 19th century Iron Stone Meat Plate, the octagonal slightly scalloped rim, banded with lattice border, enclosing flowing flowers and foliage.

The inner edge of the rim banded in inward rising scrolled petals, before the centre decorated with a scene of a naturalistic garden filled with flowers and blossoming bamboo, amongst which stands an oriental jardiniere overflowing with flowers.

The rear with a mark for "Semi China"

Height 2 inches, 5cm.

Width 19 3/4 inches, 47.5cm.

Depth 14 1/2 inches, 36cm.

Transferware is earthenware or porcelain decorated using a copper-plate printing process developed in eighteenth-century Britain. The technique allowed complex, highly detailed patterns, often Chinoiserie or floral landscapes, to be reproduced efficiently onto ceramic forms.

These platters were typically constructed from heavy earthenware or ironstone body material. Cobalt blue oxide pigment was applied via paper transfers under the glaze, followed by firing to create a durable, waterproof finish.

Authentic period pieces often feature subtle transfer seams or overlaps in the pattern, fine glaze crazing, underglaze maker marks, and small stilt marks on the underside left by kiln supports during firing.
