FAQs

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the sixteenth century onwards. Heavily influenced by imported Chinese porcelain, it created the iconic blue and white hand-painted pottery style that became widespread across Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Traditional Delftware consists of an earthenware body coated with an opaque white tin glaze and decorated with cobalt oxide paint. Converted lamps typically incorporate a turned hardwood base, brass electrical socket fittings, and an internal threaded rod extending through the original vessel.

Authentic historical Delftware features a soft, reddish or buff earthenware body visible beneath glaze chips, subtle glaze pinholes, and hand-painted marks on the base. Antique pieces adapted into lamps usually show evidence of drilling at the base or modification to fit brass light mountings.
