Each sconce is cast in solid brass with a richly modelled backplate incorporating foliate scrollwork, stylised Gothic ornament and distinctive grotesque mask terminals from which the arms emerge. The deep relief casting and substantial weight give the pair excellent presence, with the scrolling arms supporting twin lamp holders above the decorative shield-shaped backplates.Well designed and decorative, these sconces have a strong architectural quality typical of the Gothic revival taste, with bold modelling and characterful mask details adding a slightly theatrical medieval note.
