Pair English Gothic Revival Brass Twin Arm Wall Sconces with Grotesque Masks, C.1920–1940

1920 - 1940
Description

Pair English Gothic Revival Brass Twin Arm Wall Sconces with Grotesque Masks, c.1920–1940

A striking pair of English Gothic Revival brass twin-arm wall sconces, dating to the early–mid 20th century. Each sconce is cast in solid brass with a richly modelled backplate incorporating foliate scrollwork, stylised Gothic ornament and distinctive grotesque mask terminals from which the arms emerge. The deep relief casting and substantial weight give the pair excellent presence, with the scrolling arms supporting twin lamp holders above the decorative shield-shaped backplates.

Well designed and decorative, these sconces have a strong architectural quality typical of the Gothic revival taste, with bold modelling and characterful mask details adding a slightly theatrical medieval note. The castings are heavy and of good quality, producing an attractive depth and warmth to the brass surface which sits comfortably within both traditional and eclectic interiors.

These sconces are wired for electricity and fitted with bulb holders, however the wiring has not been tested and they should be inspected and installed by a qualified electrician before use.

Dimensions:

Height: 34.5 cm (13 1/2")

Width: 22.5 cm (8 7/8")

Depth: 19.5 cm (7 5/8")

Condition:

Good decorative condition overall. The castings are solid and well preserved with a pleasing aged brass surface and minor marks consistent with age and use. Wired with bulb holders but untested electrically, and therefore sold as requiring checking prior to installation.
