FAQs

Camphorwood trunks have a long history rooted in East Asian craftsmanship, traditionally used for storing garments and valuable textiles due to the woods natural insect-repellent properties. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, they became popular export items traded globally, often featuring intricate relief carvings depicting traditional landscapes, figures, and folklore.

These trunks are crafted from solid camphorwood, known for its distinct aromatic scent and durability. Traditional construction typically incorporates tongue-and-groove joints, hand-carved relief panels, brass hardware such as clasp locks and hinges, and sometimes fitted internal trays.

Authentic vintage pieces exhibit traditional hand-carving techniques with natural depth and variation, rather than uniform machine stamping. Genuine items often feature period-appropriate brass hardware, hand-cut joinery, and the characteristic natural camphor scent within the interior.

A carved wooden trunk works effectively as an accent piece or functional storage unit within contemporary living spaces. It can be positioned at the foot of a bed, utilised as a coffee table in a sitting room, or placed in a hallway to ground the space with texture and historical contrast.

Preservation involves keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting. Dust gently with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes; sanding the interior lightly can occasionally help refresh the natural camphor aroma.
