Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This Victorian wall hanging picture frame is of portrait form, dating from 1898 and made by the maker Betchemann Brothers in London. The object pairs a dark brown flame mahogany veneered wooden border with mitred corners and an inner hallmarked sterling silver mount. A clear hallmark is visible near the bottom edge of the silver border. The back includes a hanging ring rather than a table stand, and the inner back panel shows replacement work consistent with age and use. The frame measures 26.5 cm high, 20.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this piece suits a gentleman's library or study, where it hangs neatly on a narrow wall space to display a single family portrait or photograph. The contrasting dark wood and bright silver materials complement traditional and transitional decorative schemes alike. The solid construction and compact profile allow the frame to integrate cleanly into small wall areas or gallery arrangements without dominating the surrounding decor.

FAQs

During the late Victorian period, silversmiths frequently crafted decorative inner mounts or full silver facings applied over hardwood bases to produce elegant desk and wall frames.

These items typically feature sterling silver mounts overlaid onto fine hardwoods such as ebony, rosewood, or mahogany, held together with precise corner mitres.

Authentic pieces generally feature official British hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver rim, including the makers mark, purity mark, assay office symbol, and date letter.

Position the piece within a curated gallery wall alongside modern artwork or display it on a wall to create visual contrast between traditional silverwork and contemporary interiors.

Clean the silver gently using a soft polishing cloth specifically designed for precious metals, taking care to avoid applying liquid polishes directly onto the adjacent wood trim.
