A Large Antique Engraved Sterling Silver Oval Tray Harrison Bros Sheffield 1912

1900 - 1920
Description

Large Antique Engraved Sterling Silver Oval Tray

By Harrison Brothers & Howson, Sheffield, 1912

A fine and substantial antique sterling silver serving tray of elegant oval form, crafted in Sheffield in 1912. This impressive piece features a raised moulded border with integrated cast handles at each end, allowing for both practical use and refined presentation.

The central field is beautifully decorated with bright-cut engraved swags of flowers and foliate garlands suspended from ribbon bows, forming a continuous decorative border around a vacant central cartouche. This unengraved reserve offers the opportunity for personalisation while preserving the tray’s classical balance and symmetry.

The tray is fully hallmarked with the Sheffield crown, lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter “u” for 1912. The maker’s mark, partially rubbed but attributable to Harrison Brothers & Howson, confirms its origin from one of Sheffield’s most respected silversmithing firms. The design reflects the refined neo-classical revival style popular during the late Edwardian and early George V period.

This is a particularly large and heavy example, with excellent gauge and presence—ideal for serving, display, or as a centrepiece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian silver, produced between 1901 and 1910 and continuing into the early 1910s, often features Neo-classical revival motifs. Designs frequently incorporate light, symmetrical hand-engraving, floral swags, ribbons, garlands, and pierced rims.

High-grade serving trays were crafted from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper for structural strength. Rims and handles were cast or spun, while decorative surface patterns were added using specialized hand-engraving tools.

Authentic British sterling silver displays a standard set of stamped hallmarks: the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay office symbol (such as a crown or white rose for Sheffield), a date letter, and a registered makers mark.

An antique silver tray provides a structured surface when placed on a sideboard, ottoman, or drinks cabinet. It functions effectively to group decanters, glassware, or small decorative items while adding metallic contrast to wooden furniture.

Sterling silver should be cleaned using a specialized silver polish applied gently with a soft microfiber cloth to prevent abrasion. Storing pieces in anti-tarnish cloth bags or lined cabinets minimises atmospheric oxidisation when not in use.
