Pair of Early 20th Century French Bronze Figural Candle Holders – Satirical / Grotesque Musicians

A highly unusual and characterful pair of early 20th-century French bronze candle holders, modelled as satirical cartoon-style grotesque figures.

Each figure is superbly cast with exaggerated features and expressive detailing. One character is depicted with a peg leg and walking stick, while the other carries a forked implement. Both have strong caricature qualities reminiscent of theatrical or comic illustrations of the period. The sculptural modelling is confident and full of personality, giving the pair real presence.

The bronzes are richly patinated, with excellent surface colour developed over time. One example appears to be signed to the underside (please refer to photographs for close-up detail).

These are not standard decorative candlesticks — they are conversation pieces. Unusual, whimsical and slightly macabre, they would suit an eclectic interior, a collector of grotesque or satirical art, or anyone looking for something genuinely different.

Condition:

Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear as expected. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

A rare and distinctive pair — I have not encountered another example of this model.
