A Pierced Pewter Bowl with a Marbled Bakelite Liner from the Art Deco Period

1920 - 1940
Sold 5 April 2026 · Robert Belcher Antiques
This “Pierced Pewter Bowl with a Marbled Bakelite Liner from the Art Deco Period” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This most unusual high quality bowl originates from the Art Deco period, circa 1930.

It is a high quality piece made in two parts. The outer is made from hammered pewter with hand cut pierced sections separated with engraved and hand chased sprays of stylised flowers.

The cut out sections highlight and show the most unusual inner liner which is made from a fabulous and rare marbled Bakelite which is made up from several subtle colours and shades.

Bakelite was a relatively new medium which was highly fashionable in the 1930s, as it was a new and unseen material.

This wonderful bowl is in excellent condition. It must have been protected over the years and perhaps displayed in a cabinet, as it shows very few signs of use and handling.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Art Deco is a design movement that emerged in France during the 1910s and flourished internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by sleek geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and the innovative use of modern industrial materials.

Art Deco tableware frequently incorporated traditional metals such as pewter, silver, and bronze, often contrasted with newly invented synthetic plastics like Bakelite, alongside glass, chromium, and catalin.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-specific manufacturing techniques, makers marks or stamps from the era, stylized geometric or floral motifs, and genuine early plastics that react predictably to testing.

Position the piece as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, coffee table, or mantelpiece, allowing its contrasting materials and metallic sheen to anchor a sophisticated tablescape.

Clean pewter gently with a soft cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina, and wipe Bakelite components with a damp cloth without submerging them in hot water.
