These nineteenth century French carriage lamps serve as wall lanterns, constructed from brass and glass with an aged brass finish. Each piece displays an eight-sided glazed glass body beneath a tiered chimney top, mounted via a cylindrical socket and a vertical wall bracket. Signs of age include a weathered, unrestored surface showing patina on the metal body, with visible electrical wiring extending downward from each fixture. Measuring 43 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, they suit installation on either side of an entryway, in a hallway, or along a narrow wall space in a traditionally styled home, requiring connection to an electrical supply for use. Originally designed for illumination on horse-drawn carriages, these wall sconces bring authentic French traditional character to interior spaces. The lanterns hold upright electrical fittings inside the glazed panes, casting light through the glass panels. Simple mounting hardware secures each lamp directly to vertical surfaces. They integrate well into period corridors, living rooms, or dining spaces as accent lighting, complementing rustic wooden panels or classic wall finishes.

Carriage lamps were developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to provide illumination on horse-drawn carriages. Manufactured with ventilated chimneys to disperse oil or candle smoke, many surviving French examples were later converted for electric use as interior or exterior wall light fixtures.

Traditional carriage lamps were constructed primarily from sheet brass, copper, or iron, combined with bevelled or flat glass panels. The interior reflector surfaces often featured silvering or polished metal to maximize light output from the candle or oil burner.

Authentic period carriage lamps feature specific construction signs, including tiered ventilation caps designed for heat output, original mounting sockets at the base, and evidence of historical oil or candle burner housings prior to any electrical conversion.

Carriage sconces can be mounted in hallways, dining spaces, or flanking a doorway to add historical architectural detail. Pairing patinated brass metalwork against muted paint tones or natural stone surfaces highlights the silhouette and texture of the metal.

Maintain brass carriage lamps by gently dusting the metalwork and clearing glass panels with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid aggressive metal polishes if retaining the natural aged patina and historical surface oxidisation is desired.
