Pair of Merman Twin-arm Candelabra Lamps

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking pair of sculptural twin-arm lamps featuring cast merman figures, each emerging from stylised bases set on square plinths and supporting fluted light arms. These pieces were originally conceived as candle candelabra, and were adapted for use as electric lighting in the early 20th century.

The figures are boldly modelled, with expressive facial features and classical detailing, finished in a dark patinated bronze surface. The later electrification allows the pieces to function practically while retaining their dramatic sculptural presence

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The merman or Triton motif originates from classical Greco-Roman mythology and became popular in European decorative arts during the Neoclassical, Regency, and Empire periods, where figures were frequently cast to hold candle arms or electrical light fittings.

These lighting fixtures were traditionally crafted from cast bronze, brass, or spelter, often featuring hand-chased details, aged patination, and weighted square bases to balance the twin-arm design.

Authentic pieces feature detailed hand-chasing, seam lines from historical casting methods, weighted internal bases, and genuine surface oxidisation rather than a uniform modern painted finish.

A pair of sculptural metal lamps provides effective balance when placed symmetrically on a dining room sideboard, an entryway console, or a living room mantelpiece.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that can remove natural patination; apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal finish.
