Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Leaded glass panels with soldered cames: popular domestic design in the 1920s.
Rotary-cut plywood backboard: standard cabinet construction of the inter-war decades.
Quarter-sawn oak with prominent medullary rays: the silvery flecks typical of the timber.
Original brass slide bolts with single-slot screws: hardware unchanged since manufacture.
Turned bun feet under a moulded plinth: characteristic inter-war revival styling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1920s Jacobean Revival bookcase is made from solid dark brown oak with a polished finish and stands 123 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. The piece has a moulded cornice along the top, a pair of double doors with leaded glass panes divided into twelve sections, and rests on turned bun feet. Inside, three adjustable wooden shelves sit above a dark patterned fabric lining the base. Practical for everyday storage, this dark wood display cabinet suits a traditional study, home office, or living room to house books and decorative items. The right door secures with a metal lock and key, while the left door has internal brass-coloured keepers to keep it closed.

FAQs

During the 1920s, British furniture design frequently drew inspiration from Jacobean Revival and Arts and Crafts aesthetics, featuring dark stained oak, clean rectilinear forms, geometric leaded glass panelling, and turned bun feet.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid oak or oak veneers, fitted with hand-leaded glass doors, brass hardware, and interior wooden shelving designed to support heavy volumes.

Authentic 1920s examples often exhibit distinct oak grain patterns, leaded glass panels held with soldered lead cames, original brass escutcheons or key closures, and Period-appropriate joinery on internal shelf supports.

Integrate dark oak cabinets into contemporary schemes by placing them against neutral background walls, styling the interior shelves with a curated balance of books, stoneware ceramics, and framed art to offset the dark timber.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain of the oak timber, and clean the glass panes carefully using a soft lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid overspray onto the wooden frame or lead cames.
