ANTIQUE #SA1188651

Georgian Welsh Oak And Inlaid Coffor Bach

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Havard and Havard

A good example of a small oak and chequer inlaid coffer of a form that was peculiar to south and west Wales.

The moulded edge lid is detachable and retains its original wooden strut hinges. The front has two inlaid panels centred by chequer stars or florets. The waisted, projecting lower part has two inlaid short drawers above a shaped frieze and elegant cabriole legs. Old but later brassware. Branded “RH” on the underside of the central drawer runner.

Traditionally associated with marriage, these miniature versions of larger coffers would have been used to store a woman`s most precious, small possessions and were often passed down through the female line in Welsh families.

Probably Glamorganshire or Carmarthenshire, circa 1760-1780.
