Description

A large and impressive Regency leather ottoman, dating to circa 1810, newly reupholstered in hand-dyed brown leather of exceptional quality.

The generously proportioned top features deep, traditional buttoning and a hinged lid, opening to reveal a clean interior lined with black calico, ideal for storage.

The ottoman is finished with neatly applied brass stud detailing around the edges and stands on mahogany bun feet.

The leather has been expertly finished to reflect period character while remaining crisp and refined.

Presented in excellent showroom condition.

A Regency leather ottoman is a low, upholstered piece of furniture dating from or styled after early 19th-century British design. Inspired by low seating brought from the Ottoman Empire, European cabinetmakers adapted the form to include deep buttoned leather and interior storage.

Traditional construction relies on solid timber internal framing, such as oak or mahogany, layered with horsehair or coir padding. The exterior is upholstered in full-grain leather hide and finished with hand-tacked brass close nailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut brass upholstery studs, traditional deep diamond buttoning without modern stapling, natural patination across the leather, and heavy timber plinths or concave shaped bases.
