Silver photo frames gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as portable photography became accessible, allowing families to display portraits prominently on mantelpieces and side tables.

Traditional frames typically feature sterling silver or silver plate bonded to wooden cores or weighted easel backs, often incorporating velvet backing and intricate hallmark stamps.

Authenticity is verified by locating hallmark stamps indicating metal purity and maker marks, alongside examining the construction of the wooden backing, hinges, and natural tarnish patterns.

They can be arranged symmetrically on a mantelpiece or console table to introduce metallic texture and reflect light within modern minimalist or classic schemes.

Preservation involves regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and gentle cleaning with specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasives that can damage delicate metal layers.
