A Pair of Ashford Marble Candle Sticks

19th century
Description

A charming pair of 19th century Ashford Marble candlesticks. These candlesticks are a lovely example of this traditional local craft. The wide variety of colourful stone set around the base contrasts beautifully with the black polished marble.

The condition of the candlesticks is compatible with age, there are a few very minor nibbles, these do not detract from the appeal.

In the 19th century Ashford marble was extremely fashionable with a wide cross section of society, used for major projects in large country houses and small items in general. This continued until the source of the materials ran out in the early 20th century, hence items such as these candlesticks have become rare.

A matching pair of Victorian candlesticks made from Ashford black marble stands ready for placement upon a mantelpiece. Each piece has a turned shaft rising from a circular base, finished with a polished black surface and decorated with geometric specimen marble and malachite inlay in shades of red, green, brown, and white. Cream taper candles sit snugly in the upper sockets. The marble shows minor edge nibbles consistent with age and handling. Each candlestick measures 6.5 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter. These decorative accessories bring historic British craftsmanship into a modern interior setting, adding a touch of traditional character to a living room mantel, side table, or dining surface. The contrasting tones of the inlaid stone work catch the eye against the dark background, offering a subtle focal point for traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike.

Ashford Black Marble is a fine-grained dark limestone quarried exclusively near Ashford-in-the-Water in Derbyshire, England. It gained immense popularity in the 19th century after being championed by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The base object is carved from dark Derbyshire limestone, whilst decorative inlays utilise varied specimen stones including malachite, lapis lazuli, baryte, fluorite, and colourful regional marbles to create geometric or floral mosaic patterns.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut stone specimens fitted tightly into carved recesses without gaps. The dark limestone background exhibits a deep polish, and the underside often shows hand-turned lathe marks or age-appropriate wear.

Positioning stone candle holders on a fireplace mantelpiece or console table creates a grounding focal point. Pairing dark, textured stone with neutral wax tapers balances modern minimalism with historical decorative craftsmanship.

Clean soft stone items using a soft dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals or acidic cleaners, as acids strip the surface sheen. Occasional application of a neutral microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface.
