Nutmeg graters became highly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries when whole nutmegs were an expensive luxury spice imported to Europe, requiring diners and hosts to grate their own spice at the table.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as hammering, turning, and piercing for the internal steel or silver rasp, often featuring hinged lids or threaded screw caps.

Authenticity is determined by checking for period-correct hallmarks, makers marks, hand-cut rasp teeth, and natural wear patterns consistent with age and manual use.

This small collectible can be displayed as a cabinet curiosity, styled on a bookshelf alongside antiquarian books, or placed on a desk as a conversation object.

Preserve the silver by storing it in a dry environment, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes, and using a soft microfibre cloth to gently remove tarnish while preserving any historic patina.
