A stunning early Victorian silver gilt, larger than normal, snuff box by rarely seen maker Abraham John Norman in London 1841.
AJ Norman registered this mark on 14th August 1841 as a jeweller in Wynyatt Street, Clerkenwell, London. This therefore must be one of his first items registered as it hallmarked the same year.
It was very hard to find this maker as he is not listed on any normal silver hallmarking sites. Eventually, with help, he was located in the reference book John Culme - Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914 (see last 2 photos).
Rectangular form, beautifully engraved to all sides, with gilt interior which is worn / marked in places,
Measuring 8.5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm and weighs 103.7 grams. Shaped vacant cartouche to the front.
Condition: Very good. General surface wear, a few small dings and scratches, hinge working well, gilding good with a few marks, hallmarks clear, usual signs of wear commensurate of age and use.
