An Exquisite Victorian Silver Potpourri Basket

19th century
Description

An exquisite Victorian silver Potpourri basket, of excellent quality. This beautiful piece is fitted with a rope twist loop handle, allowing the basket to be hung inside a wardrobe should one wish. There are two centrally hinged lids of pierced fretwork design, featuring bunches of cherries. The geometric fretwork and the bunches of cherries are delightfully repeated to the attractively shaped body, which has a stippled finish. The Potpourri is finished with rope twist borders, which charmingly continue the basket theme and the interior retains a light wash of gilding. A superb piece, both decorative and usable. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian silver potpourri baskets were designed to hold dried aromatic flowers, herbs, and spices, allowing fragrance to diffuse through pierced lids while serving as decorative tabletop ornaments.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, utilizing techniques such as piercing, casting, chasing, and wire-twisting to achieve detailed lattice work and decorative borders.

Authenticity is verified by identifying official silver hallmarks indicating purity standards, maker marks, town marks, and date letters, usually struck on the base, rim, or underside of the lid.

The item can be displayed on a vanity tray, mantelpiece, or bedside table alongside books or ceramics to introduce historic metalwork textures into modern spaces.

Regular dusting with a microfiber cloth helps prevent tarnish build-up, while occasional gentle cleaning with a specialized silver polishing cloth or foam maintains the finish without damaging delicate chased details.
