Introduced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, silver menu card holders were used at formal dinner parties to display individual menus or guest seating cards for seated courses.

These items were predominantly crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, often constructed with a solid circular or weighted base to ensure stability on table linens.

Genuine British sterling silver examples feature stamped hallmarks, including the makers mark, town assay mark, lion passant, and a date letter corresponding to the 1901 to 1910 period.

Beyond formal dining tables, menu holders can be displayed on a desk, sideboard, or mantelpiece to hold business cards, small art prints, or photographs.

Gently clean using a soft cloth and specialized silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive materials or harsh chemical dips that could obscure delicate hallmarks.
