Georgian Small Swag and Tail Engraved Taper Spirit Decanter

18th century
Description

This is a small Georgian engraved clear glass taper spirit decanter, mouth-blown some time in the late 18th century, c1780.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows significant age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with 200+ years of use.

The decanter has been blown in clear glass and measures 8 cm (3.2 inches) across at its widest point, the base, which has been polished to remove the pontil mark. The neck of the decanter is cut with hexagonal scales and there is a basal band of finger flute cutting. The body of the decanter has been wheel-engraved with a swag and tail pattern, tulips ascending from the swags and with stars set above. The decanter is 19.5 cm (7.8 inches) in height without the stopper, and 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) tall with the stopper inserted. The stopper is of cut lozenge form and is probably not the original; it is of the right style and metal and a reasonable fit - it can be turned in the neck and the decanter lifted up by the stopper when empty. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

Lead glass weighing in at 285 g. (~ 10 oz.). It holds approximately 500 ml. (two thirds of a bottle of wine).
