FAQs

William IV furniture, popular from roughly 1830 to 1837, bridges the Regency period and early Victorian era, often featuring robust classical proportions, heavy scrollwork, and rich dark timbers such as mahogany.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, utilising traditional dovetailed joints, hand-turned feet, and graduated stepped shelving tiers.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate patina, hand-cut joinery, old growth timber grain, characteristic scroll pediments, and turnings consistent with 1830s cabinet-making techniques.

Integrating this piece into a contemporary space is achieved by contrasting the rich dark timber with neutral wall colours, pairing it with minimalist decor, or using it to display curated collections of books and ceramics.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources, occasionally feeding the timber with traditional beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
