This Art Deco desk lamp originates from the 1930 period and is constructed from dark brown Bakelite. The piece takes the form of a table lamp with a curved gooseneck arm, a domed shade featuring a cream interior, an integrated toggle switch, and a moulded oval base. The dark brown surface possesses a polished finish, and the shade is attached via a shoulder joint that allows adjustment in multiple directions. The proportions measure 30 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. Suitable for placement on an office desk or study table, this item provides directional task lighting. It functions as a reading light or workspace illumination source, sitting directly on desktop surfaces to supplement ambient room lighting in a home study or library.

FAQs

Streamline Moderne Bakelite lighting from the 1930s emphasises aerodynamic curves, clean lines, and functional minimalism inspired by modern transportation design. The use of dark, moulded Bakelite allowed designers to create seamless, continuous forms with integrated switches and shades.

These lamps were constructed primarily from Bakelite, an early synthetic phenol formaldehyde resin, which was heat-resistant and easily moulded into complex shapes. Internal components typically included brass swivel joints, electrical wiring, weighted bases, and enamel-coated interior shades for efficient light reflection.

Authentic Bakelite pieces feature visible moulding seams, uniform density, and a subtle phenolic odour when gently warmed by hands or a hairdryer. Original lamps often bear stamped manufacturer marks or patents on the underside of the base and feature integrated toggle or push switches typical of the era.

An Art Deco Bakelite desk lamp provides a strong architectural accent when placed on a contemporary executive desk, dark oak sideboard, or minimalistic library table. Its rich dark hue contrasts effectively against pale walls or timber surfaces.

Clean Bakelite surfaces using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical solvents. Prior to use, original electrical components must be inspected and updated by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards.
