Description

A rare Victorian silver MacGregor Clan Brooch, by MacKay & Chisolm Edinburgh 1898, of annular form with incised scroll decoration and niello enamel border, with an applied pierced armorial of the MacGregor family, engraved to reverse 'MACGREGOR OF GLENCROE' (sic) and 'MACGREGOR BROOCH 1904'. Within original fitted Morocco leather case.

The brooch is extremely well made, the armorial can be removed and worn seperately by using the clip device on the reverse.

Note: While this design is a known type, the reason of manufacture is still unknown, but perhaps for a large clan gathering or event. It is interesting to note that there are other recorded, dated, examples dated 1884. While not all are marked, the only recorded makers of these pieces are MacKay and Chisolm. Of the two known types both are identical, except the addition of niello enamel to some, the type represented here is the scarcer.

The arms are that of MacGregor of MacGregor of Lanrick and Balquhidder, baronetcy created 1795, Chief of clan Gregor.

5.5cm diameter.

Scottish clan crest brooches and plaid pins gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, largely driven by the Romantic revival of Highland culture and Queen Victorias affinity for Scotland.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid silver, often featuring intricate openwork, hand-engraving, and occasionally agate or Cairngorm stones, reflecting traditional silversmithing techniques of the period.

Authenticity is typically determined by hallmarks, weight, patination, and the construction of the pin mechanism on the reverse, which often features a traditional c-clasp or tubular hinge.

In interior settings, such pieces are often displayed in shadow boxes or on small stands as cabinet curiosities, while as accessories they continue to be worn on lapels, scarves, and traditional tartan garments.

Antique silver should be stored in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment and cleaned minimally using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip historical patination.
