Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional form of storage furniture developed in England during the late 17th century, essentially bridging the evolution between a simple hinged storage box and a chest of drawers by adding a single drawer beneath the main compartment.

These pieces were constructed primarily from native English hardwoods, predominantly quarter-sawn oak, using traditional frame-and-panel joinery secured with wooden pegs rather than metal nails, allowing the timber to expand and contract naturally over centuries.

Authentic items display period-correct hand-carved detailing, hand-planed surfaces with irregular tool marks, hand- forged iron or brass hardware, and hand-cut dovetails within the internal drawer construction, alongside genuine age-related oxidisation and shrinkage.

This piece functions effectively as a grounding element in contemporary living spaces, providing textural contrast against neutral walls while serving practical storage functions for linens or acting as a low surface for curated decorative objects.

Preservation requires placement away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood splitting, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and treating the surface periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern chemical polishes.
