Silver candlesticks have been used for centuries for domestic lighting and formal dining, evolving through various design periods such as Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian, often featuring hallmarks that record the year and maker of production.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, often weighted at the base with a resin or wooden core covered by a thin silver shell to provide stability, and constructed using spinning, casting, or stamping techniques.

Authenticity is determined by checking for official assay office hallmarks, makers marks, and standard purity stamps (such as the lion passat for British sterling silver), alongside inspecting the natural patina and construction seams.

They can be integrated into contemporary schemes by placing them as focal points on dining tables, mantelpieces, or sideboards, contrasting their reflective metallic finish with minimalist decor or natural textures.

Preservation involves regular, gentle dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional polishing with a specialised silver cream, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners that can damage the hallmarks or thin metal layers.
