Unmarked Silver Gilt Georgian Caddy Spoon

19th century
Sold 19 October 2025 · Digby Antiques (Wiltshire)
This “Unmarked Silver Gilt Georgian Caddy Spoon” found a buyer.

It was listed by Digby Antiques (Wiltshire). Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This caddy spoon is the most unusual design, it has no marks but is silver. Although it has no marks we have attributed it to Matthew Linwood. Birmingham circa 1818. In the Society of Caddy Spoon Collectors catalogue 2015 page 29 is a spoon by Linwood and the handle is identical in design. The bowl is amazing and the silver gilt is in great shape. Wondering if it is a one off or a prototype which never actually went into production.

W 4.5 cm

A caddy spoon is a small specialty spoon specifically designed for measuring loose tea leaves from a tea caddy into a teapot, becoming highly decorative and varied during the Georgian period.

Silver gilt, also known as vermeil, refers to sterling silver that has been coated with a thin layer of gold, which protects the underlying metal from tarnishing and provides a rich golden appearance.

Authentic pieces are identified by their period-specific manufacturing techniques, hand-chased or engraved details, correct weight, and often hallmarks indicating the maker and assay office, though some smaller items remain unmarked.

Antique caddy spoons can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes, or styled as part of a curated tablescape alongside other silver collectibles.

Silver gilt items should be cleaned very carefully using a soft cloth and warm soapy water, avoiding harsh silver dips or abrasive polishing cloths that can strip away the delicate gold wash layer.
