This Edwardian Carlton House desk dates from around 1900 in the neoclassical revival style. Fashioned from warm golden brown satinwood with kingwood crossbanding, ebony and boxwood line inlay, the piece displays a U-shaped superstructure containing multiple small drawers, cupboards and compartments topped with a brass gallery. The base holds three oak-lined drawers fitted with original brass drop-ring handles and backplates, raised on slender square tapered legs terminating in brass castors. The desk measures 104 cm high, 137 cm wide and 69 cm deep. Placed in a study, home office or library, this practical writing table provides dedicated organisation through its array of surface compartments alongside three frieze drawers. The compact freestanding proportions allow placement against a wall or centrally within a room, combining traditional English country house aesthetics with everyday functionality.

A Carlton House desk is a specific style of writing table designed in the late eighteenth century, characterised by a U-shaped superstructure containing small drawers and cupboards surrounding the main writing surface.

Edwardian cabinetmakers typically utilised satinwood veneers over pine or oak frames, often incorporating wood crossbanding such as kingwood or rosewood, alongside oak-lined drawers and cast brass hardware.

Authentic Edwardian examples feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, solid oak drawer linings, precise wood marquetry or crossbanding, brass gallery railings, and period-appropriate castors.

Position the desk in a dedicated home office, library, or drawing room alongside contemporary seating to create a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying and fading.
