Constructed in feathered Spanish Mahogany, with holly inlays, rising on castor capped tapered legs: three mahogany lined drawers with quadrant mouldings in the apron; the superstructure of bow form, fitted with banks of three drawers flanking the tooled leather writing surface, which in turn has a reading easel, and to the back six further fitted drawers, all with handles of rectangular shape. Two curved postbox cupboards in turn, flank the central bank. Above, the platform has a pierced trellis guardrail, and brass post slots.

The desk exactly follows George Hepplewhite’s design for a ‘Gentleman’s Writing Table’ shown in Plate 21 of the posthumously published ‘Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide’. The desk was chosen by George 1Vth for his personal usage at the Carlton House, Pall Mall, London.
