Arita porcelain originated in Hizen Province (modern Saga Prefecture) following the discovery of kaolin clay in the early 17th century. Items shipped from the port of Imari to European markets became known as Imari ware, celebrated for their exquisite craftsmanship and blue-and-white or polychrome designs.

These pieces are crafted from fine-grained porcelain clay, hand-thrown or moulded, and then hand-painted using cobalt oxide pigments under the glaze before being fired at high temperatures in traditional wood or gas kilns.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit subtle irregularities from handcrafting, foot rings with firing grit, hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer prints, and sometimes traditional potters marks or reign marks on the base.

Clean antique porcelain gently with a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals. Avoid displaying them in direct sunlight or areas of high humidity to protect the glaze and body integrity.

An antique porcelain charger can be displayed vertically on a wall using a specialised plate hanger, or mounted horizontally on a dedicated stand as a striking focal point on a console table or sideboard.
