Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Horizontal backboards with hand-wrought nails: cabinet work before machine milling.
Tenons passing through the body sides: traditional eighteenth-century joinery.
Hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes: early handmade construction.
Natural shrinkage gap along the side boards: long-term drying of solid oak.
Shaped bracket feet and moulded body rails: classic mid-Georgian form.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian chest of drawers originates from the eighteenth century, constructed from dark brown oak with a visible timber grain and a warm patina. The rectangular top has a double moulded edge above five long, graduated horizontal drawers arranged in descending depth. Each drawer holds two brass swan-neck handles mounted on backplates, alongside a central brass keyhole escutcheon. The case rests low upon bracket feet beneath a straight apron base. The chest measures 76 cm wide by 46 cm deep and 82 cm high. Practical storage capacity makes this piece suited for placement in a bedroom, hallway or living area to hold folded linens, garments or everyday items. Solid timber construction and traditional joinery suit an English Country House interior style. The surface displays minor variations in the wood tone and age-related wear consistent with domestic use over centuries. Maintenance requires only occasional dusting and waxing to preserve the natural grain and finish.

Georgian oak chests of drawers from the 18th century are characterised by solid wood construction, straight fronts, graduated drawers, and functional proportions. Typically featuring brass swan-neck handles and bracket feet, they represent classic English regional and country cabinetmaking.

Craftsmen constructed these pieces using solid English oak joined with hand-cut dovetails for the drawer linings. Secondary timber such as pine or deal was frequently utilised for drawer bottoms and back panels.

Authentic period chests display hand-tool marks, slightly irregular dovetails, and original fixings such as cast brass handles with square nuts. Drawer runners and bottoms typically exhibit wear and shrinkage aligned with long-term wood movement over centuries.

An antique oak chest of drawers adds grounded warmth when contrasted against clean neutral walls and minimal contemporary decor. Positioning the piece in an entryway or bedroom creates a balanced blend of historical patina and contemporary design.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly once per year. Position the chest away from direct radiators, heating vents, and prolonged direct sunlight to prevent timber movement or drying.
