Georgian chests of drawers, produced between 1714 and 1830, are defined by classical proportions, solid wood construction, and functional drawer arrangements such as the two-short-over-three-long configuration. They typically feature bracket feet or ogee feet, moulded tops, and brass hardware with decorative backplates.

Late 18th-century case furniture predominantly utilised solid oak, mahogany, or walnut. Drawers were assembled using hand-cut dovetail joints, often lined with oak or pine secondary timbers, and secured with hand-forged iron nails and wooden pegs.

Authentic 18th-century chests show signs of hand-planed surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetails, and shrinkage gaps in solid timber panels consistent with age. Looking at the back panels and drawer undersides reveals hand-sawn timber marks and age-related oxidisation of the wood.

A Georgian oak chest serves as a grounding focal point when placed against neutral or contemporary painted walls. Styling the surface with modern lighting, ceramic art, or a contemporary mirror creates a balance between historical texture and clean modern aesthetics.

Preserve solid oak by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain moisture and patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or fading.
