17th Century Geometric Design Oak Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A highly decorative late 17th-century English oak chest of drawers circa 1670s-80s geometric star panels and continuous bobbin turning.

This striking piece is a classic example of the bold North Country / Yorkshire geometric style of the Stuart period. The façade is divided by multiple horizontal bands of bobbin (bead) turning, with vertical bobbin mouldings framing a series of raised geometric panels that form distinctive star and lozenge motifs. The arrangement comprises four drawers, all with matching geometric patterns.

It retains a deep, mellow original colour and excellent surface patina. All timbers are original, including the top and the back boards, which remain in their honest, unrestored state. The brass drop handles and keyhole escutcheons are still in place, and the chest stands on block feet with a continuous base moulding.

A rare and particularly well-preserved example of this distinctive late 17th-century form — full of character, architectural presence and integrity. The chest separates it to two parts for ease of movement.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Jacobean geometric style originated in seventeenth-century England, characterised by applied architectural mouldings in complex star, diamond, or rectangular patterns. Furniture from this period is predominantly constructed from native English oak and features heavy proportions, mitred panel work, and turned decorative elements such as bobbin or bead mouldings.

Seventeenth-century chests were constructed from solid English oak using joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. Drawers were typically side-hung on wooden runners grooved into the drawer sides, assembled with early dovetail or hand-nailed joints, and finished with iron locks and cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period pieces display uneven hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail or pinned joint construction, and side-runner grooves along the outer drawer sides. Original timber shows natural oxidisation, shrinkage around panel joints, and wear consistent with age, alongside hand-forged ironwork or early cast brass drop handles.

A seventeenth-century oak chest provides visual weight and texture when juxtaposed against crisp contemporary backdrops. Positioning the piece against neutral plaster walls alongside modern artwork or contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern minimalism.

Oak furniture requires protection from direct heat sources and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber splitting or warping. Dusting with a dry, soft cloth and periodic application of a high-grade beeswax polish preserves the protective patina and protects the wood surface without introducing moisture.
