This seventeenth-century Charles II chest of drawers is constructed from solid oak with dark brown timber tones and clean elm drawer linings. The rectangular facade comprises four graduated drawers arranged in a two-plus-two formation, ornamented with applied geometric mouldings and geometric panels that create strong architectural depth across the front. Original brass teardrop drop handles are centrally positioned on circular backplates, accompanied by matching brass keyhole escutcheons set into the drawer divisions and lock plates. A bold, projecting base moulding supports the heavy carcass, which stands directly on low stile feet beneath a broad top board with a simple moulded edge. Measuring 87 cm high by 100 cm wide and 57 cm deep, this substantial piece provides generous storage capacity for folded garments or linens. Positioned in a traditional hallway, bedroom or living space, it introduces historical character and robust proportions to an interior scheme.

Originating in late 17th-century England, Charles II chests of drawers typically feature geometric moulding, deep panels, and split-frame oak construction. They mark the transition from early joined chests and coffers to dedicated multi-drawer case furniture.

Chest drawers from this era were traditionally crafted using solid English oak joined with mortise and tenon construction. Drawers typically operated on side grooves rather than bottom runners and were fitted with hand-cast brass drop handles and decorative escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature geometric applied mouldings, hand-sawn oak backboards, pegged timber joints, and side-runner drawer slots. Original brassware often includes teardrop handles or period-correct replacement plates showing historic oxidisation.

Position dark oak furniture against muted plaster walls or framed modern art to emphasise its geometric silhouette. Balance the substantial visual weight of the oak with clean-lined modern lighting or minimalist ceramic accessories.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax paste annually to preserve the wood patina. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent timber movement or splitting.
