17th Century Moulded Oak Chest of Drawers.

17th century
Description

A late 17th century oak moulded chest of drawers with carved panels to the ends.

This chest of drawers consists of a three plank top with a moulded edge leading down to four long drawers.

Interestingly this chest has an early use of recycling. The reuse of the carved rail to the inside of the chest and the carved lunette panels to the ends, indicate that earlier wall paneling was broken up and incorporated into this chest of drawers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century Jacobean chest of drawers is characterised by solid oak construction, geometric applied mouldings across drawer fronts, and a transition from traditional chest coffers to modern front-opening storage drawers.

Chests from the late 17th century were typically constructed from native English oak, featuring hand-cut joinery, drawer side-runners, brass tear-drop drop handles, and decorative brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature wooden peg joinery, heavy timber framing, side-hung drawer construction, natural oxidisation on internal pine or oak boards, and period-appropriate hardware.

Integrate the dark oak tones alongside contemporary artwork, neutral wall paints, or modern lighting to create a grounded contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean architectural lines.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement.
