FAQs

A bouillotte lamp is a traditional style of desk or table lamp featuring a central standard with multiple candle arms and an adjustable toleware shade. It takes its name from bouillotte, a popular 18th-century French card game, for which the adjustable shade allowed players to direct light downward onto the table while keeping it out of their eyes.

Authentic period bouillotte lamps are typically constructed from cast or gilt bronze, ormolu, and painted sheet metal known as toleware. The base and candle arms often feature classical motifs, while the shade is frequently hand-painted with gilded scrollwork or neoclassical patterns and attached to a central adjustable rod.

Authentication involves examining the casting quality of the bronze, the patina on the metal, the presence of hand-applied gilt ornamentation rather than modern stencilling, and the overall weight of the piece. Older wiring methods, hand-cut screws, and the characteristic craquelure on aged toleware paint are also key indicators of age.

An antique bouillotte lamp functions effectively as an accent light on a home office desk, a sideboard, or a living room console table. Its classical silhouette and adjustable shade bring a layer of historical elegance and focused task lighting to both traditional and transitional interior schemes.

Preservation requires dusting the lamp gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the painted surface or delicate gilding. Water, harsh chemical cleaners, and abrasive polishes must be strictly avoided, particularly on the toleware shade, to prevent stripping the historic finish.
