Antique Afghan Baluch Carpet, Possibly Timuri, Unusual Design, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 9ft 0in x 6ft 1in (274 x 185cm).

Antique Timuri or Baluch main carpet, with an unusual variation of a classic design, complete kilim ends with stripe design.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

An interesting Baluch carpet from Western Afghanistan, which has design elements to the field and borders that are often attributed to the Timuri. The field has six complete latch hook medallions with two 'pencil box' designs in the middle of the field. The carpet has a classic Timuri colour palette of soft madder red and dark indigo blue, with highlights in ivory and light blue. The long kilim ends have a stripe design decorated with bands of weft work.

The carpet is in good condition with even wear with medium pile, some corrosion to the browns. There is some historic wear to the kilim ends and an old patch repair at the lower end.

Stock Number: DS-0720.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch carpets are traditional textiles hand-woven by nomadic Baluch tribes living in eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. They are renowned for dark, saturated colour palettes featuring indigo blues, deep terracottas, and purples with intricate geometric or medallion motifs.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for the pile, woven onto a wool or goat hair warp and weft foundation.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces display natural dyes, soft lustrous wool, dark colour tones, woven flat-weave ends, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

Dark tribal rugs serve as anchoring elements in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with dark leather, mid-century timber furniture, or minimalist interiors to provide depth and texture.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotating brush, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and treat spills immediately with a clean cloth and cool water.
