Description

A fine example of a late 17thc / early 18thc brass "sheet metal" chamberstick....sometimes known as a "frying pan" type, which is quite English in its features....the rolled copper rivets.....the plain candle sconce and the lack of punchwork and embossed decoration....this fine example has a nicely shaped handle for hanging up when not in use and note the pleasing lathe marks underneath, where the brass has been turned on a lathe to reduce the thickness and then finished by hand....all the filings gathered up again to re-use, as the brass was very valuable in those days ....the brass is of a good weight and quality...overall in excellent condition with no dents or cracks....a lovely example of these hard to find pieces of early lighting.

A chamberstick is a portable candleholder featuring a shallow pan and a handle, designed in pre-electrification eras to illuminate bedrooms and hallways during nighttime movement.

Early chambersticks were predominantly fabricated from cast or sheet brass, often incorporating copper rivets, iron handles, or pewter elements depending on the period.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-beaten surfaces, casting flaws, file marks, copper construction pins, and period-appropriate patination rather than modern machine tooling.

Placing an antique chamberstick on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or coffee table introduces historic character and tactile metallic warmth to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Preserve the historical patina by avoiding harsh chemical polishes; instead, gently remove dust with a soft brush and apply microcrystalline wax if necessary to protect the metal.
