Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A giltwood pricket candlestick is a decorative lighting stand crafted from carved wood coated in gesso and finished with leafed gilding. Originating predominantly from Italian churches and palazzos during the 17th to 19th centuries, these tall stands feature a metal spike (pricket) at the top to secure large wax candles.

Traditional construction involves a carved softwood core, such as pine or poplar, covered with layers of gesso plaster. The surface is then treated with bole clay and finished with gold leaf gilding, often combined with painted polychrome accents and a hand-forged iron top pricket.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving techniques, visible gesso beneath worn gilding, and age-appropriate cracking known as craquelure. They typically feature natural oxidation on metal components and layered wear on high-relief areas where the underlying timber or bole shows through.

A tall candle stand adds vertical architectural scale to contemporary rooms. Interior designers frequently position them in empty corners, alongside a fireplace hearth, or in pairs flanking a console table to balance modern minimalist furnishings with historical texture.

Dust giltwood regularly using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or soft artist brush. Avoid water, chemical solvents, or damp cloths, as moisture dissolves water-gilded gesso and causes the gold leaf to lift from the wood.
