Old Sheffield Plate is a composite material made by fusing a layer of silver onto a copper base, predominantly produced from the mid-18th century until the mid-19th century before being largely superseded by electroplating.

These items were crafted using the fusion plating technique, bonding sterling silver and copper, often shaped by hand-raising or spinning on a lathe with soldered seams.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining exposed copper edges where the thin silver layer has worn through over time, alongside the absence of electroplate hallmarks and the presence of makers marks characteristic of the period.

These vessels can be utilized as decorative desktop pencil holders, small floral vases, or displayed on open shelving to introduce historical metallic textures into contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polish to avoid wearing away the thin silver layer, storing them in low-humidity environments, and avoiding harsh chemical exposure.
