Art Deco uranium glass, often referred to as vaseline glass, contains trace amounts of uranium dioxide added to the glass mix as a colourant, resulting in a distinctive green or yellow hue that fluoresces brightly under ultraviolet light. Production peaked during the 1920s and 1930s within European and American glasshouses.

These pieces were typically crafted using pressed or mould-blown glass techniques, often paired with metal mounts such as sterling silver or silver-plate for the fitted lids, reflecting the high standards of European industrial craftsmanship of the period.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a characteristic bright neon-green glow under a 395nm UV blacklight due to the uranium content. Additionally, examination under magnification reveals period-appropriate mould seams, microscopic surface wear, and the weight consistent with vintage pressed glass.

Place the item on a reflective surface such as a mirrored tray or near a light source to accentuate the translucent colour properties. It works well as a focal point within minimalist or eclectic displays, contrasting against neutral tones.

Clean the glass component using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals that might damage the surface or silver components. Polish the metal lid gently with a specialised microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from any interior joints.
