Georgian Rare Triple Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass

18th century
Description

This is a rare Georgian, English triple series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765. The stems of most triple opaque twist glasses, which are rare, look crowded, but this is elegantly blown.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a rare triple series opaque twist stem consisting of a single white enamel cord interweaved with a gauze wound around a central thick white enamel cord. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.2 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a tiny extraneous piece of glass on the inside of the base of the bowl which dates from manufacture. There is a collector's label for the Harald Leuba Collection to the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 145 g. (~ 5 oz.).

Provenance:

Christie's New York, 24 November 2009, lot 354 (part)

Leuba Collection
