Victorian fruit knives gained popularity in the 19th century as portable cutlery used for slicing acidic fruits like peaches and citrus, as silver blades did not react to fruit acids in the way steel blades did.

These implements typically feature a sterling silver or silver-gilt blade paired with handles carved from iridescent mother-of-pearl, often complemented by intricate hand-engraved detailing or inlaid cartouches.

Authentic pieces generally bear British hallmarks stamped on the blade, indicating the assay office, silver standard, and date letter, alongside securely pinned mother-of-pearl scales showing natural grain and ageing.

Such small items look exceptional when displayed within a glass-topped coffee table tray, inside a shallow collectors cabinet, or positioned open on a bookshelf as part of a curated display of curiosities.

Preservation requires gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap followed by immediate drying with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the delicate nacre and silver engraving.
