These French wall lights belong to the Louis XVI style period of 1930 and are constructed from silver-gilded brass with a silver colour finish. Each wall sconce has a decorative backplate featuring a pierced ribbon bow cresting at the top and a hanging tassel drop terminal at the base. Two reeded scrolling arms extend outward, holding leaf-decorated bobeche drip pans and reeded candle sconces with white candle-style tubes and clear bulb fittings, showing a nice original patination across the metal surfaces. Each wall light measures 43 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. They suit installation on a narrow wall space in a French chateau interior setting, providing accent illumination along hallways, stairwells, or flanking a mirror in a traditional living room or bedroom.

French Louis XVI style wall sconces feature neoclassical motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity, such as ribbons, bows, tassels, urns, and foliate scrolls. Popularised in the late 18th century, these wall fixtures emphasise symmetry, restrained proportions, and refined ornamental details.

Historically, wall appliques were cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax casting technique for detailed definition. The metal surface was then finished with silver leaf or silver plating, creating a bright metallic surface to amplify candlelight.

Authentic antique appliques show evidence of hand-chasing on the metalwork, distinct seam lines from traditional sand or wax casting, and natural oxidisation to the silvered surface. Original pieces often feature hand-cut threads, square nuts, or internal paths drilled later for electric wiring.

French silver sconces can be placed flanking a central mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or installed within narrow wall panels and hallways. The cool silver tone integrates with dark paint palettes, polished stone finishes, or traditional timber panelling.

Clean silver gilded metal using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft artist brush to clear dust from detailed recesses. Avoid chemical polishes, water, or abrasive pastes, which can strip historic silver leaf or delicate patination.
