A joint stool is a sturdy wooden seat constructed using mortise and tenon joints, held together with wooden pegs, which originated in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England and was frequently used at the dining table.

These pieces were typically constructed from native English hardwoods, most commonly oak, due to its strength, abundance, and durability.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon construction, hand-carved details, timber shrinkage, and natural oxidisation or wear consistent with centuries of use.

It can be utilised as an accent piece, a small side table next to a sofa or armchair, or as a display surface for sculptural objects in a room to add historical contrast.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural wax to nourish the timber.
