Antique George V Sterling Silver Fox Pepperette (1910)

1900 - 1920
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English cast sterling silver pepperette in the form of a fox; an addition to our animal related silverware collection.

This exceptional antique Victorian cast sterling silver pepperette has been realistically modelled in the form of a fox.

The surface is embellished with details reproducing the fox's coat and facial features.

The pepper retains the original hallmarked push fit cover/head which features pierced 'pepper' holes to the fox's chin; the location of the holes creates an increased aesthetic appearance to the piece and is a fine feature.

Antique silver fox pepper pots make a charming and distinctive gift, ideal for Christmas, birthdays or weddings. Favoured by collectors of novelty silver and hosts who value whimsical yet refined tableware, they add character to any curated dining setting.

Condition

This antique sterling silver fox pepper is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The cast decoration is very sharp.

The hallmarks struck to the surface of the fox's tail and part hallmarks to the sleeve of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck clearly due to the superior gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods leading into the George V era, silversmiths began producing realistic animal-form condiment vessels to add character to formal dining tables.

These items were typically cast in sterling silver using lost-wax methods or two-part moulds, followed by hand-chasing to create surface textures such as fur or feathers.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office mark, a makers mark, and a specific date letter denoting the year of manufacture.

A silver animal pepperette can be styled on a sideboard top, integrated into a formal dining table setting, or displayed inside a glass cabinet alongside other metalwork.

Silver should be polished gently using a specialised silver polishing cloth or low-abrasive polish, stored in a dry environment to minimise oxidisation, and kept free from acidic residue.
