Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian mahogany library bookcase has a dark brown finish and stands 247 cm high, 98 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. The upper section contains twin glazed doors with decorative tracery, beneath a swan-neck pediment with carved acanthus scrolls, fluting, and a central brass eagle finial over a brass ball. Fluted pilasters frame the glazed doors on each side. The lower section consists of two panelled cupboard doors with flame mahogany veneer, set above a moulded plinth base. Brass keyhole escutcheons are set into the doors. Visible condition details include a broken pane of glass in the upper section and minor wear to the timber finish. Suitable for a study or library, the bookcase provides storage for books and display space behind glass doors in a traditional home interior. The lower cupboards house larger items or paperwork out of sight. Placed against a wall, the piece anchors a room with its architectural proportions and classical ornamentation.

FAQs

Bookcases from this era frequently drew inspiration from Neoclassical and Georgian cabinetmaking traditions, featuring architectural elements such as swan-neck or pedimented tops, fluted side pilasters, dentil mouldings, and decorative door tracery framing original glass panes.

These cabinets were constructed using solid mahogany framework faced with rich flame mahogany veneers. Doors feature individual leaded or wooden glazing bars holding glass panels, while cabinet bases feature mortise-and-tenon framing alongside tongue-and-groove timber backboards.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings, hand-planed timber surfaces on cabinet backs, irregular thickness in original cylinder glass panes, and genuine patination around original brass locks and hinges.

A substantial mahogany bookcase serves as an anchor piece in formal study rooms, dining areas, or spacious hallways. Designers balance its visual weight by pairing it with neutral wall palettes, contemporary upholstered seating, or curated collections of ceramics alongside leather-bound volumes.

Preserve the finish by applying natural beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, avoiding silicone sprays. Position the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, and uneven fading of the wood colour.
