Georgian Double Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass, Ovoid Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English double series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 4.8 cm (1.9 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two white enamel gauzes wound around a central twist of two white enamel cords. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.2 cm (5.7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a tiny black inclusion (probably coal) at the base of the bowl which can be felt on the outside surface. There is a collector's label for the Harald Leuba Collection to the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 125 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Provenance:

Christie's New York, 24 November 2009, lot 354 (part)

Leuba Collection
