FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a layer of silver to a copper core, predominantly manufactured in Sheffield, England, from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

These items were constructed by thermally fusing a thin sheet of sterling silver onto a thicker base of copper, often featuring a gilded interior known as vermeil and hand-soldered components such as stems and foot rims.

Authentic pieces often reveal a thin reddish line of exposed copper along the cut edges, seams, or areas of wear, and typically lack the official hallmarks found on solid sterling silver items, though makers marks or scratch marks may be present.

This piece functions effectively as a decorative accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open shelving unit, introducing a touch of historic metallic sheen to both contemporary and traditional room schemes.

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer down to the underlying copper, avoiding harsh chemical dips.
