This Georgian chamber candlestick from the nineteenth century follows an elegant oval form in silver plate and copper, finished in a bright silver colour. The piece includes a central urn-shaped sconce with a beaded rim above an oval saucer base, accompanied by a removable snuffer cone and integrated wick-trimming scissors fitted horizontally across the tray. Surface details include fine beading along the rim, a cylindrical handle loop, and visible copper bleed along raised edges showing age. Measuring 11 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, the object sits easily on a bedside table for ambient bedroom lighting or functions as a decorative tabletop accessory in a living room.

FAQs

Popularised in the eighteenth century, a chamberstick is a short, portable candle holder featuring a tray base and a handle, designed for lighting ones way to bed. Old Sheffield plate refers to a fusing process invented in 1742 where a layer of silver was bonded onto copper before being wrought into metalware.

Georgian chambersticks were made by fusing sterling silver onto a copper ingot, which was subsequently rolled into thin sheets and shaped into the tray, sconce, and handle. Complete examples often incorporated tailored slots or mounts for a matching conical extinguisher snuffer and wick-trimming scissors.

Authentic Old Sheffield plate pieces frequently demonstrate subtle copper bleed-through where the thin silver layer has worn away on raised edges. Unlike electroplated silver produced after 1840, Old Sheffield plate typically lacks standard British sterling hallmarks, occasionally displaying stamped symbols or maker marks instead.

Position a silver chamberstick on a bedside table, hallway console, or alongside books on a mantelpiece to provide historic texture. Pair the holder with simple wax taper candles to emphasize the reflective polished finish against dark wood or contemporary surfaces.

Clean silver plate using a soft cotton cloth alongside a mild, non-abrasive silver polish to prevent wearing down the silver surface. Avoid aggressive rubbing on raised decorative borders, store in low-humidity environments to slow oxidisation, and dissolve wax residue with warm water rather than scraping.
