Large Victorian Buttoned Leather Footstool

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

This large Victorian footstool is generously proportioned, it serves equally well as a luxurious footrest, coffee table alternative, or statement centrepiece.

Newly upholstered in a thick quality leather and hand dyed using traditional technique to create a rich chestnut brown colour, selected for its natural character and depth of tone. The leather has been carefully worked to highlight the natural grain and subtle variations in colour, creating a warm and inviting patina. Deep-buttoned in the traditional Chesterfield style, the surface features a tactile, cushioned finish that enhances both comfort and elegance.

Framing the upholstered top is a brass studded trim, each stud individually hand-applied to ensure precision and authenticity—adding a refined, decorative detail that elevates the overall aesthetic.

Beneath, the stool is supported by solid mahogany turned legs. The rich tone of the polished mahogany complements the chestnut leather beautifully. Each leg is mounted on a caster wheel, allowing for ease of movement while preserving the period charm.

A rare piece that offers both durability and decorative appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the nineteenth century, Victorian buttoned leather footstools feature deep-tufted leather upholstery secured with buttons, designed to accompany low seating or serve as central room focal points.

Authentic period examples feature solid hardwood frames, typically mahogany or walnut, upholstered in hand-finished hide with brass studding, coil springs, and turned legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-stitched leatherwork, original brass castors with age-appropriate wear, turned wooden legs with natural patina, and hand-tacked upholstery studs along the frame base.

Place the stool centrally as an alternative coffee table styled with a wooden tray, or position it alongside a sofa to add textural contrast and warmth to contemporary living spaces.

Keep the leather away from direct heat sources to prevent drying, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply a specialised leather conditioner periodically to retain flexibility.
